Tokyo stocks opened higher on Friday after the Dow edged to another record close in New York, while investors were on the sidelines ahead of a three-day weekend.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index gained 0.32 percent, or 63.86 points, to 20,163.67 in the first few minutes of trading, while the Topix index of all first-section issues was up 0.38 percent, or 6.22 points, at 1,625.33.

On Thursday, global stock markets were mostly higher, boosted by remarks from Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen that investors interpreted as a sign US interest rates would not rise rapidly.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.1 percent to finish at its second straight record.

Japanese financial markets will be closed on Monday for a national holiday.
